All set for a feast of folk at 39th edition of festival

-

The factory girls from Made in Dagenham are seeing red.

That’s Becki Mackenzie in the centre, who is playing Rita in the new production of the car factory musical put on by Perth Amateur Operatic Society.

The show opening tonight sees the ladies of the factory assembly line take a stand for equal pay in 1968, when they found – despite doing the same skilled work as men, making the car seat covers – they were getting paid less.

When Ford refused to make their pay the same as male workers, they walked out. Their action represented the resurgence of rank and file trade unionism in one of the most ruthlessly anti-union firms in the world.

Made in Dagenham has music by David Arnold and lyrics by Richard Thomas. It’s a heart-warming and funny musical about the strike and the effect it had on the families which were set on getting a fair deal.

See it at North Inch Community Campus Theatre from April 4-9 at 7.30pm with a Saturday matinee on April 8. Tickets £12 or £10 concessions from www.paos.weebly.com This weekend’s Glenfarg Village Folk Club Feast will be held in Kinross for the second consecutive year ... writes Melanie Bonn.

The three days for fans of the popular Scottish folk scene culminate in a concert featuring the legendary Steve Tilston and Jez Lowe.

Taking place from Friday to Sunday centred around the Green Hotel, the 39th Folk Feast will include dancing on the first night under the lead of the Craigie Collective Ceilidh Band and some invited guests.

Saturday will bring a guitar workshop conducted by Maurice Dickson, followed by an organised singaround and then the Original Song Competition with this year’s theme being ‘Wildlife’.

The trophy for the event will be awarded to the funniest original song of the afternoon.

After the laughter has died down from that event, next up is a brilliant concert featuring the exciting young band Dallahan, the amazing John Tams and Barry Coope, the wonderful voice of Robyn Stapleton and the club’s very own merry band of local minstrels and songsters, the Farg Folk.

Sunday, meanwhile, starts with a special event titled ‘A Conversation with John Tams’.

That is followed by a singaround, a children’s entertainment featuring the amazing Artie Trezise and Ryan Moir, and the world famous Puff-a-Box championships.

And there will be no let up as the Feast moves on to another great night at Backstage, featuring double act Tilston and Lowe.

Folk fans will next get to see the brilliant young Irish group Na Leanai, and the wonderful guitarist and singer Maurice Dickson to bring the weekend to a close.
