A frank chat about cancer over a coffee

Alister offers a supportive ear

- Melanie Bonn

Alister H Walker of the Perth and Kinross Prostate Cancer Support Group, which now meets in the Salutation Hotel There’s no easy way to learn about prostate cancer and, for men, asking the questions can be particularly awkward.

But advice has been available in Perth for quite some time, albeit from a relatively unassuming source.

Alister H Walker, owner of independent photo store JRS Photography on Scott Street, jokes that he should have a business share in Cafe Bodrum opposite as he has taken so many people across the road from his shop to have a coffee and a private word about the implications and practicalities of this most private of cancers.

He told the PA: “You could say it’s become my consulting room!”

Since 2013, award-winning Alister has been chair of Perth and Kinross Prostate Cancer Support Group and arranges for awareness events and outreach services to people who may be becoming concerned they should visit their doctor.

The group – supported by the charity Prostate Cancer UK – meets on the first Tuesday of the month determined to pass that milestone and I keep longevity as the prize in mind.

“That was 11 years ago, and back then I didn’t have the opportunity to get the support I craved,” said Alister.

The businessman now does awareness talks for Probus Clubs, the Round Table and many other organisations.

“It takes courage to talk about it. Now I’d proudly say I’ve earned my degree in the ins and outs of this cancer.

“But I think people really appreciate the stories I can share and the honesty with which I will be straight with any questions they might be reluctant to ask.

“Prostate cancer is by far the most common cancer affecting men and the risk is heightened greatly if there have been cases in your immediate family.”

Alister invites men – and anyone they wish to bring with them – to come to the group’s next meeting, held from 1.30pm on May 2 at the Salutation.

Dr Michael Kellacher will be giving a talk on some of the latest drugs used to treat the condition.

Alister concluded: “You would be amazed at what comfort can come from talking over a tea or coffee.”
