Something familiar about refurbished pub

Malt House facelift

- Paul Cargill

Duncan Donaldson and Raymond Innes A popular Perth publican has brought a Princes Street premises back from the brink.

And Raymond Innes, who previously managed the Fair City’s now closed Moncrieffe Arms, hopes the latest addition to his new venture will help take regulars on a trip down memory lane.

Raymond has refurbished the Malt House’s former Miranda Lounge to recreate the dining experience customers will remember fondly from the Moncrieffe.

It took the local businessman eight weeks to turn what had been an empty shell into a fine dining area with the help of some of his regulars, who similarly assisted him in repairing and refurbishing the old Malt House interiors prior to its reopening in January this year.

Raymond has also persuaded Duncan Donaldson, who previously cooked at the Moncrieffe, to work in the Malt House’s new kitchen as head chef so pub-goers can once again savour the same popular dishes he used to prepare at the Moncrieffe until it closed last October.

The restaurant can seat up to 30 people and Raymond – better known to his customers as ‘Big Ray’ – reckons his restaurant is already off to a flyer as it is regularly fully booked and orders are already being taken for Christmas.

“We started serving meals on Saturday and it was full the first night,” he said.

“A lot of people who come in are old regulars from the Moncrieffe. I can tell what they’re going to order as soon as they come in!

“I’d really like to thank the regulars who helped me get the restaurant ready, especially Don Calin, who did such a fantastic job with the place.”

The Malt House Bar and Grill, as it now known, is open for pub lunches and suppers from Wednesday to Sunday.
