Brownies throw party for elderly

- Melanie Bonn

The older and younger generations were united at a tea party hosted by the 16th Perth Brownies.

The girls provided an afternoon of tea, cake, sandwiches and entertainment as part of achieving their hostess badge for two local Contact the Elderly groups.

Contact the Elderly organises free tea parties for older people who live alone.

Lorna Dunbar from the charity said: “It was a fantastic afternoon for everyone.

“Our guests were delighted to be looked after so well by such energetic Brownies. Many commented on how it brought back memories of being young girls themselves and some had even been Brownies.

“Our parties are always special but bringing the generations together like this is even more so and we all agreed the girls had definitely earned their badges.”

There is currently a waiting list of people keen to take part in the parties in Perth and the charity hopes to establish a third group.

Lorna said: “A lot of older people spend a great deal of time on their own.

“Being less able to get out and about can be terribly draining, particularly for those who live alone.

“Our tea parties are already bringing a great deal of relief to people in this position but we would love to be helping more. To do this we need more volunteers. ”
