Time for tea? Then pop along to sheriff court

New volunteer call

- Melanie Bonn

Perth Sheriff Court tea bar volunteers Sheena Johnston and Margaret Grant A tea bar at Perth’s Sheriff Court may no longer be viable if more volunteers don’t step forward to help run the service.

When visiting the Tay Street building everyone – whatever their part in the proceedings – welcomes a cup of tea and a snack.

The tea bar has been running for several years and raises money for the Children’s Hospice Association Scotland (CHAS).

Every year, the facility sends between £6000 and 7,00 to support the CHAS base at Rachel House in Kinross.

Sandra McClelland contacted the PA to ask if anyone in Perth could give a few hours a month to help run the cafe.

“There are about 18 volunteers, which is not a bad pool. But I am concerned that some kind souls have been doing it for many years and as they get older, they may decide they want to stop and we need to plan for the future.

“It is a court, so yes, perhaps it could be a little daunting to imagine being there and seeing witnesses, accused persons and their companions coming through,” said Sandra.

“But I would add that it is a very interesting and constructive thing to do with your time.

“It would be a great shame if due to lack of volunteers we had to cease running the facility.”

Sandra explained that no food preparation happens, it’s just a case of serving hot drinks, sweets and pre-wrapped baked snacks.

There tends to be two people running the tea bar at any one time, getting there at 9.15am, opening at 9.30am and being there until noon.

Volunteers would be needed for one three-hour session a month. Managing two sessions would be a bonus.
