Abernethy

Bowling Club The club will open for the 2017 season on Saturday, April 8, commencing at 2pm. Newcomers will be most welcome. Horticultu­ral Society The April talk will be by Sarah McArthur, who will talk on the propagatio­n of plants in Peru and the challenges she faced while living there for two years. She had previously worked as a propagator at Glendoick Nurseries. This is a change in speaker owing to unforeseen circumstan­ces. The meeting will take place in the Mason’s Hall, Main Street, on Wednesday, April 12, at 7.30pm. Entrance fee £2.50, includes refreshmen­ts. Free to members.

Joint service A joint service will take place in Dunning Church on Sunday at 11am, and will be led by the Rev James Aitchison. All are welcome to attend the Aberuthven and Dunning stated annual meeting in the church on Sunday after worship. A copy of the trustees report and accounts is available at www.aberdun.org.uk. Dates for Easter - Good Friday Lect service takes the form of John Stainer’s Crucifixio­n in Dunbarney Church at 6.30pm. Easter Sunday dawn service will be held in Tron Square at 7am. Almondbank

St Serf’s Church The service on Sunday of last week was conducted by Rev Iain Paton, assistant minister at Auchterard­er Church, and his sermon was ‘Life leads to death: death leads to new life’. The scripture readings were read by Flora Wylie, the organist was Alison Hooper and the flowers were kindly gifted by Margaret Taylor. Anyone who requires the pastoral services of a minister during the vacancy, should contact Michael Archibald on 01738 840995. There will be a meeting of the Kirk Session on Thursday, April 13, at 7.30pm and a joint Good Friday service in Methven Church on Friday, April 14, at 6.30pm. Residents are reminded that due to the Almondbank Flood Protection Scheme, access to Almondbank will either be by the A85 via Dalcrue or the A9. The service this Sunday will be conducted by interim moderator, Rev Dr Rob Barlow, at the usual time and everyone is welcome.

Alyth

Alyth Church Morning worship on Sunday of last week was conducted by Rev Mike Erskine. The Palm Sunday service will begin in the church on Sunday at 11am before the congregati­on walks down to Airlie Street Hall in procession. During term time the Sunday school welcomes children to the front pews of the church each Sunday morning. A creche for under-threes is available during every Sunday morning service. The prayer group meets on Thursdays in Burnside Court lounge at 10.30am. Choir rehearsal meets every Friday at 6.45pm. The church website at www. alythparis­hchurch.org.uk is updated weekly. During Holy Week from April 10-14, services will be held in the lower church hall at 7pm. There will be a walk up Alyth Hill on Sunday, April 16, prior to morning worship at 11am. Family History project Alyth Family History Project will be closed until Perth’s first dog-friendly cafe has opened up, and is already welcoming the Fair City’s canine pets for coffee.

Alan Sams, along with his dog Stitch, set up Al Freco Cafe a month ago on Scott Street, with coffees, teas and cakes, as well as a selection of soups and hot and cold sandwiches available.

One pet who is already enjoying the cafe is Baxter, along with his owner Katie McCandless from Dog Friendly Perthshire.

She said:“There are so many people who want to take their dogs with them and Perth is becoming more dog friendly - I certainly try to take Baxter everywhere I go. It is just fantastic because there is nothing else in the town with such a good seating area and it is really quiet for the dogs.”

The cafe’s owner Sam has built everything in the cafe right down to the chairs, and hopes to spread his love of dogs across Perth.

Bridging the Past Brig in Bloom’s new project to create a community garden with a heritage theme has been successful in its bid to receive Heritage Lottery funding for the history part of the project. The first activity will be a visit to the Museum of Rural Life, East Kilbride on Thursday, April 20. All are invited to come along. Burrelton Church ‘New life and faith’ was the theme of morning worship on Sunday of last week, led by the Rev Stevie Thomson. Aileen Riches read from Ezekiel chapter 37, verses 1-14 and from the Gospel of John chapter 11, verses 1-45. Office bearers on duty were Susan Christie, Frank Moisey and Alec Orr. The organist was Lynne Mitchell. Teas and coffees were served by Mira and Hugh Ormiston. Easter services will begin with an informal communion service in Collace Church on Maundy Thursday at 7.30pm; a Good Friday service will be held at Cargill and Burrelton churches; Easter morning witness at 8am will be held on the riverbank at Cargill, followed by breakfast in the church halls at Woodside. People are encouraged to park their cars and walk along the riverbank. An Easter family service will take place in the church at 10am.

Church news Rev Peggy Ewart Roberts led worship in Clunie Church on Sunday of last week with Janet Coyle, organist and Paul Latham reading the lessons. Morning service will be held in Caputh Church on Sunday at 11.15am. Loch Leven Community Library Events begin with ‘The Fairy in the Kettle’ with Pauline Tait on Friday, April 7, from 10.45am to 11.45am; suitable for children aged four to eight years.
