Bowling Club Numbers in the lottery this week were 7, 15, 18 and 19. No Conservation volunteers were very egg-cited to note there is now a first egg in the osprey nest at Loch of the Lowes near Dunkeld.

On Tuesday, April 4, female osprey LF15 laid her first egg of the season at the Scottish Wildlife Trust’s reserve.

A camera trained on the nest revealed a mottled brown egg when the bird stood up at 7.10pm.

Male osprey LM12 returned to the

winning line; prize money next week will be £2000.

NAG Newburgh action group The group would like to thank everyone involved with their recent coffee morning, whether working behind the stalls, serving coffee, raffles, on the door or helping in the kitchen. Thanks to everyone who donated baking, bric-a-brac, tombola and raffle prizes, and to Canatara, Scottish Deer Centre and KP for their donations. The sum of £600 was raised and this money will go towards the £8000 required each year to keep the Christmas lights shining and the flower tubs, boats and hanging baskets filled. Everyone will be most welcome to their annual general meeting, which will be held in the nest a few minutes later and after a brief squabble to decide who would incubate the egg, the female settled down for the night.

The date of the first egg to arrive equals the earliest recorded first laying at Loch of the Lowes, on April 4 2005.

Last year and the season before, LF15 reared three chicks in the same nest perched above the loch.

TiCC on Tuesday, April 25, at 7pm. Thursday Club Members enjoyed another enjoyable afternoon with the Disclaimers group. It made such a difference to their singing when the words of the songs were handed out to those present. The tea served by the committee afterwards was more than welcomed after all their strenuous singing. Next week’s entertainment will be provided by the Woodside Trio. Come and join in on any Thursday afternoon at 2pm. There are still a few seats available for the outing to the Fife coast on May 4. Whinnybank Cat Sanctuary Sue and Steven had great fun this week catching fish, which were no longer wanted, from a pond in Gauldry. They can now live out the rest of their lives happily swimming in the pond at Whinnybank. As the owners were filling in the pond, Sue also came away with plants, frogs, toads and spawn. Sue would like to thank Linda and Isabel for their hard work in dressing the Easter windows in the shops in Newburgh and Auchtermuchty respectively, which now look great. Sue has had a lot of calls from people wanting to donate bedding to the sanctuary. Unfortunately, she does not have time to pick it up and requests volunteers to drop this off at one of the shops. Thanks also go to everyone who donated cat food recently, and to the MS Society for their donation of bric-a-brac and books. Anyone who can offer a home to a cat, help at fundraising events, in the shops or at the sanctuary, should please call Sue on 01337 840414, or see visit their website at www.catchat. org and www.whinnybank.org.uk.

All being well more eggs will be added over the next few days and this first egg could hatch in about six weeks time.

Charlotte Fleming, SWT’s Perthshire ranger said:“LF15 gave us a first glimpse of the egg just after 7pm yesterday evening and LM12 swooped in to investigate shortly afterwards. LF15 has settled down to begin incubating.”

Charlotte Flower, a chocolatier from Acharn. She has been making chocolate for eight years following a career in forestry. In great detail, she explained the complex process of making chocolate, from harvesting the pods from trees grown around the equator, to the production of superb top of the range chocolate. Chocolate was known to the Aztecs and Mayan people thousands of years ago and reached Europe in the late 18th century. Van Houten, Mr Nestle, Mr Fry and Mr Lindt all helped in perfecting the production of the brands that are now familiar. Members were then treated to a taste of Charlotte’s chocolate, made from cocoa beans from all over the world, with subtle differences in flavour depending on where the cocoa came from. Chairman Hugh Mackintosh asked Dr David Cruikshank to give the vote of thanks on behalf of a very appreciative audience. Their next meeting will be held in Moulin Hall on Monday, May 1, when the speaker will be Gordon Dilworth on the topic of ‘Rhyming for fun: a lifetime of verse’. All welcome. Church The Easter services will begin with a Walk with the Cross event on Friday, April 14, at 8am; meeting outside the church at 7.50am. There will also be a Good Friday service at 7pm on that day. The open air service is an ecumenical communion service on Sunday, April 16, in the Explorers Garden at Pitlochry Theatre at 7am. Easter morning all age worship will be held in the church at 10.30am and will include communion. Football The Vale of Atholl FC league match was sponsored by RW Bell Building Services. The score was Vale 0 - Kettins 3. The team were Walker, Henderson, Taylor, Simpson, Berry, Robinson, Houston, Young, Sheppard, Scrimgeour, McLauchlan, Barrie, Robertson, Clark, Smillie and Clark. Vale had to start the game without the experienced Darabus, Kennedy and Millar, who was injured and Chris Smillie, who was not deemed fit enough to start. Vale never really got to grips with the visitors, who were one of the best teams to visit them this year and looked to deserve being top of the league. However, the referee didn’t help the home cause. There was not a whole lot of difference early on, as Kettins played slick football only kept out by Vale’s defence. Neither side had a clear cut chance until Vale made a couple of defensive errors, which eventually led to the winger shooting through a number of players and into the net with Kyle Walker unsighted. Scrimgeour, McLauchlan, Robinson and Sheppard were prominent going forward for Vale, but again no clear cut chance was presented resulting in a half time score of 0-1. Vale pressed hard for the leveller at the start of the second half with some excellent play down the right. Steven Henderson came forward much more, but the visiting defence didn’t crack under the pressure. Kettins scored a second from a corner, with the centre half heading home when he found himself unmarked. Again, Walker was unsighted as the ball skipped past players in the box. Vale made some changes, with Sheppard and Houston taken off, replaced by Clark and Barrie. These changes allowed Henderson to get forward even more, but again his good work came to nothing as Kettins defended well. Robertson and Smillie went on for McLauchlan and Scrimgeour. Vale also made some positional changes and, although this allowed them more of the ball, they didn’t trouble the Kettins keeper too much. The Kettins centre then put the game beyond doubt when he gathered the ball with his hand. From 35 yards out, he strode forward and smashed an un-saveable shot into the roof of the net for a third goal. However, the referee dismissed all appeals for the handball. The game petered out after this as defences again handled things pretty comfortably. Vale supporters will not kid themselves that this was one of their better games, as they didn’t often get a foothold in the game. Defensively they did well, but still made errors with the first two goals. The midfield struggled during the game with the pace and passing of the opposition, as did the forwards against a really good defence. All of the Vale squad played well enough and never gave up. However, it just wasn’t good enough on the day and they never looked like getting the better of the unbeaten league leaders, whose team work, pace and passing was excellent. Walker in goal couldn’t be faulted. Henderson had a good game at the back, especially when he went forward. Robinson did most of his good work on the defensive side, both down the right and left side. The man of the match was Glenn Robinson. Tomorrow the club are away to the Pole team in Perth with a 2pm start. Flower Club The club will next meet at Scotland’s Hotel, Pitlochry on Wednesday, April 19, commencing at 2pm. This month’s demonstration will be given by Shamima Hassan on the topic of ‘Around the world’. There will be a competition for club members named ‘something exotic’. Winners of the raffle could also go home with a beautiful flower arrangement. Visitors are welcome; admission costs £5. For further info phone Linzee Linsay (chair) on 01738 710777 or Carol MacGill on 01796 473026. Community council Pitlochry and Moulin community council’s next monthly meeting will be held in Pitlochry High School on Wednesday, April 12, at 7.30pm.
