City make waves at championsh­ips

Perth swim club’s success in Aberdeen event

Perth City Swim supporters watched on proudly as the club’s biggest ever National Age Groups team competed at the Scottish Championsh­ips.

Fourteen boys and 13 girls achieved the entry standard within the individual and relay events, which recently took place in Aberdeen.

There were several notable swims from the club’s relay teams with many of the younger swimmers gaining the experience of competing at their first national competitio­n.

The individual events saw 43 new personal best performanc­es, and 12 swimmers progressin­g to finals in 40 individual events.

In the 11-13 years age group, Katherine Bailey won bronze in the girls 100m butterfly, with Jamie McGregor bringing home three individual medals in the boys events.

They included gold in the 1500m freestyle with a 22.26s improvemen­t on his personal best time, and gold in the 800m freestyle.

Jack Muncey took home silver in the boys 14 years 100m backstroke on day one, before following it up with a further four individual medals across the championsh­ips.

He slashed 30.04s off his entry time to take silver in the 800m freestyle on the final day.

Rising star Scott McLay, competing in the 17/18 years category, won gold in the 100m backstroke, 50m backstroke and 50m freestyle events. And he clinched another three individual medals over the five days.

One of those was gold in the 100m freestyle, where he posted a nomination time for the 2017 Commonweal­th Youth Games. The event is scheduled to take place in Nassau, Bahamas from July 17-21.

11-13 years: Katherine Bailey - 100m butterfly bronze, 200m butterfly 6th, 50m butterfly 8th. Jamie McGregor - 400m freestyle bronze, 1500m freestyle gold, 800m freestyle gold, 100m backstroke 8th, 50m butterfly 9th, 200m butterfly 4th, 400m IM 6th.

14 years: Shona Graham - 50m breaststro­ke 10th. Jack Muncey - 100m backstroke silver, 400m freestyle silver, 200m backstroke silver, 800m freestyle silver, 50m backstroke bronze, 50m butterfly 9th, 100m butterfly 6th, 200m freestyle 4th.

15 years: Freya Bannerman 100m breaststro­ke 10th. Finlay Cormack - 50m breaststro­ke 9th. Luke Mitchell - 200m breaststro­ke 4th, 50m breaststro­ke 4th, 100m breaststro­ke 8th.

16 years: Tom Jeffers - 200m butterfly 8th, 1500m freestyle 4th, 800m freestyle 7th. Freya Thomson - 200m IM 7th, 100m butterfly 8th, 50m butterfly 5th.

17/18 years: Jacob Marchbank - 50m breaststro­ke 7th, 100m breaststro­ke 10th. Scott McLay 100m backstroke gold, 50m freestyle gold, 100m freestyle gold, 50m backstroke gold, 50m butterfly silver, 100m butterfly silver, 200m freestyle 9th. Kirsty Pitts - 200m backstroke 10th.
