Smith shines on first start for Saints

- Matthew Gallagher

Clive Smith Clive Smith admits he was thrilled to start his first game for St Johnstone on Wednesday evening.

The right-back, on loan from Preston North End, produced a composed display to help guide Saints to a crucial 1-0 victory against Hearts.

Smith was pleased with his personal performance but insists football is a team game and that clinching the three points was the priority.

“I’m over the moon and was buzzing when I was named in the team,”the 19-year-old told the Perthshire Advertiser after the Hearts game.

“But more importantly the lads put on a fantastic performance which was different class from the front to the back. This is not an individual game, it’s a team game.

“We were a unit, pushing forward and defending when we had to. We did the ugly side of the game well too.

“It was a great header from Joe to win the game and we managed to see it out.

“There are obviously nerves before you step on to the pitch. But you don’t think about what could go wrong, it’s all about

what I’m going to do in the game.

“My full focus was on the game and thankfully for me I think I’ve played alright.”

Smith, who was hoisted into the action at half-time of Saturday’s defeat at Hamilton, has thanked boss Tommy Wright for putting his trust in him.

“Tommy told me to give the same as I did against Hamilton and I would be fine,” Smith explained.“He believes in me and I thank him for giving me the opportunity.

“I worked hard and did all I could do for the team and the gaffer.

“At the end of the day it’s up to the manager what he does and I just need to get on with it. Whatever team is put out we get right behind it and that’s how we get the three points on a Saturday.

“Only time will tell if I get the nod for Saturday. It’s up to the gaffer and we will move on with that team.”

While Smith has only been at the club since the summer, there is a realisation that this is another special season for the Perth side.

“The first achievement was nailing top six which is fantastic for the club,”he said.

“And now you set your individual goals and it’s about trying to get fourth spot and potentially get into Europe. That would be an unbelievable achievement, hopefully we can carry on.

“I’m really enjoying it and have been welcomed with open arms, just like I was when I first spoke to you when I arrived.

“I feel like one of the boys now which is good.”
