Improvement work now started at Craigie Wood

-

Improvement works have begun at Craigie CommunityWood, with tractors moving in to cut down a number of trees.

Members of Perth South Green Spaces Community Group are working with the Dupplin Estate landowners to trim out young trees in the wood to improve the quality of the remaining trees, and also to improve Craigie wood for wildlife and people.

Betsy MacQueen, the group’s treasurer, explained:“We are working with the landowner and other organisations and businesses to improve the community wood. The first stage is thinning the wood, and this has just started so people who use the community wood and live close to it will notice the big tractors moving in and the trees being cut down and will be wondering what’s going on.

“In fact it is being done to improve the area for wildlife and the quality of the trees because far too many wereplanted. Oncethewoodis thinned out it will be better for the woodland and in the long run it will be better for wildlife.”

The public footpaths running through Craigie wood will remain open throughout the improvement works, but the green space group warn people to be careful when they are out walking and mindful of the tree felling work going on.

The group say the thinning is just the start of a number of plans for the woodlandinthefuture. Betsysaid: “We have plans for the future - we will be improving the entrances to the wood, upgrading the footpaths, and replacing the picnic benches. The thinning is just the start.”
