Tay Probus Club Our speaker on April 5 was Doreen Beattie who gave a fascinating insight into the life and work of Mary Slessor. Now retired, Doreen spent 25 years in Nigeria working for Shell teaching children of the Company’s employees. Having lived and worked in the south east corner of Nigeria in and around Calabar, the area in which Mary Slessor operated, Doreen was able to compare and contrast the very different conditions in which Mary worked as both teacher and missionon

The winners of the Perth Flower Club annual show are pictured from left to right, Eleanor Crichton, Ross Claase, novice champion; Lorne Heriot-Maitland who presented the prizes, Janice Sloan, Margo Kettles, club champion; Lindsey Gibson, and Mary Morrison ary. Born in 1848 in Aberdeen, the second of seven children of a poor working-class family, after moving with them to Dundee in 1859 Mary started part-time mill work at the age of eleven, spending half the day at school and the other half at the mill. She developed an interest in religion and, on hearing of the death of her hero David Livingstone, she resolved to follow in his footsteps. Having applied to join the United Presbyterian Church Foreign Mission and at the age of 28, after training in Edinburgh, she was assigned to the Calabar region of Nigeria to work amongst the Efik people. Freed slaves were being educated - given the “book” – and there was acceptance that the “white God” was part of the plan and of no harm. By learning and using the local language Mary became integrated into Efik society travelling by canoe, by walking or even cycling on what the natives called the Iron Cow. By regularly visiting families who were reassured by her humility and keen sense of humour she confronted the superstitious practise of killing twins in infancy. Over time she saved many hundreds of twins from this traditional fate and even adopted one girl as her own daughter, naming her Janie. Mary suffered intermittent fevers from malaria contracted when she was first in Calabar and although she required to return to Scotland several times for treatment and rehabilitation she always returned to her mission work in Nigeria. Eventually the fevers took their toll and Mary died in January 1915 aged 66. She was accorded a state funeral and flags on government buildings were flown at half mast. Several memorials to her exist in the provinces of Calabar and Okoyong and in 2009 the Clydesdale Bank honoured her life and work by portraying her on their £10 bank note. This was a warm and heartfelt tribute to a woman of whose name we may have been aware but where the details of her dedicated life were largely uknown. Hendry Lindsay warmly thanked the speaker for sharing insights of Mary Slessor’s life with us and Members responded enthusiastically. Women in Business Networking Lounge A meeting place for women entrepreCraiginch,

The winner of this year’s President’s Prize trophy, Jim Waite (right), received his award from club president William Duguid neurs has started running in Perth. Carolina McFarlane had a business in the health and wellness industry for a little under three years but was daunted about networking with more established groups. When discussing this with a friend and colleague, Tanya Anderson, she took it upon herself to create the UK’s first ‘Women In Business Networking Lounge’ which has seen attendance increase and has an associated ‘lounge’ event for breakfast meetings. Carolina felt that it was time to bring the Networking Lounge up to Perth and fill the gap for the many women already in business or women who would like to start a business and want to network, make friends, share their businesses, share ideas, talk concepts and generally support each other all in an informal, relaxed, friendly atmosphere. The group meets on the last Tuesday of the month in the room upstairs in Santé between 8pm and 10pm. Santé have been wonderfully supportive towards us and at present the Women in Business Networking Lounge is free to attend and the only thing we ask is that you purchase a drink to support the venue. Attendees are encouraged to bring any promotional materials with them to lay out in a dedicated area of the room for others to see and pick up. The intention is to create, build and nurture relationships and to support respective businesses. We are just real people helping real people over a coffee (or glass of wine!) and a friendly smile! The next Lounge is on April 25 between 8pm -10pm and we can’t wait to welcome everyone! If you would like to attend a WIBN Lounge we would love to meet you! You can find us on Facebook under ‘Women in Business Networking Lounge - Perth UK’ and on Eventbright. To keep our Lounges relaxed and intimate, numbers are limited to 30 attendees so please register on Eventbright to reserve your place. Please feel free to visit our Facebook page - https://www. facebook.com/WIBNLperth for more information and news. Attendees can book through the facebook page by clicking the ‘Book Now’ button or they can follow our eventbright link - https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/ women-in-business-networkinglounge-perth-uk-tickets-32863548759
