Car tour runs up £15k total

- Staff Reporter

A charity fun run with a difference has helped to raise more than £15,000.

The Blairgowrie Drive It Day Classic Car Tour was staged on Sunday in aid of Cancer Research UK and CHAS.

Starting at 10am, some 70 classic and modern cars, from a 1930s Model A Ford to a new Tesla, were waved off from Blairgowrie Golf Club by the Lord Lieutenant of Perth and Kinross, Brigadier Melville Jameson.

In glorious April sunshine, the cars set off on a 120-mile route through Highland Perthshire, which included the notoriously steep and winding hill from Kenmore over to Glen Quaich and Amulree. The route included a lunch stop at the Fonab Hotel, Pitlochry, and concluded with high tea and prize-giving at Crieff Hydro Hotel.

The fund-raising event was organised by Blairgowrie Rotary Club and generously sponsored by Graham Environmental Services and other firms, plus individual sponsorship raised by all the car drivers saw the charity pot reach £15,800, breaking the £15k target set for the day.

Blairgowrie Rotarians picked up the baton for the event from colleagues in Strathendrick, Stirlingshire, which has raised many thousands of pounds over the past decade.

A delighted Colin Stewart, who chairs the organising committee, said:“This is the first time we have organised this event and, thanks to a tremendous effort by all involved, including helpers from the charities themselves, we have achieved this great result.

“What is more, a great day was enjoyed by all. Our thanks to everyone and we look forward to an even better event next year.”

In the lead-up to Sunday a Jaguar XKR vehicle drummed up interest in Blairgowrie with appearances in the town.
