Waste plan will harm recycle rates

-

Dear Editor

The headline in the Perthshire Advertiser of Friday, April 21, read “Uplifts fee for garden waste is rubbished.” Is this an April fools joke? The council is considering charging the good people of Perthshire a £25 fee for each garden bin to be emptied.

The bins will only contain food waste, not garden waste -a backward step or what?

They reckon these charges will generate £840,000 per annum on top of an increase in the community charge.

Of course they are desperate for money so they can continue to spend, spend, spend on unnecessary projects like a new cinema which will only result in the Playhouse closing.

The public have been recycling for the council for years in an attempt to help our planet. Do the council not appreciate this help? It would appear not!

At the moment I have four bins taking up space in my garden. Perhaps I could charge the council rent for them!

How can the bin men distinguish between household and garden waste? It sounds pretty ridiculous to me and a desperate attempt to claw in some revenue.

I for one will be telling the council to come and uplift my two garden bins giving me more room in my garden and I will buy another compost bin and an incinerator to deal with my waste myself.

I am sure my dog will also benefit from any food waste I might have.

It is only a matter of time before they start charging at our recycling centre at Friarton which will only lead to more illegal dumping which spoils our countryside and is a danger to our wildlife.

It also costs the council a lot to clear it up.

Come on Perth and Kinross Council, think before you actit’s not rocket science.

A Smith, Scone
