Spoony’s eager for summer in Europe
St Johnstone midfielder David Wotherspoon insists Perth players will give their all to book another summer of European football.
The team who finishes fourth in the Scottish Premiership currently Saints - will enter the Europa League at the end of June after Aberdeen defeated Hibernian in the Scottish Cup semi-final at the weekend.
“We’ve got another goal and target to set ourselves,” Wotherspoon said.“We made our first target which was securing top six but now we can look forward and aim for fourth.
“I’ve been here a few years now and have played in European games. It’s where you want to be playing your football.
“We need to take care of the remaining five games and perform at our best to secure that spot.
“The older boys are now getting towards the end of their careers. You live for these moments in football.
“You want to play at the highest level and European football comes under that bracket.”
Wotherspoon already has a number of special European memories in a Perth jersey. But he, too, is out for more.
“Every European game is special,”he said.“But the Rosenborg game at home was massive and it was my first season at the club.
“It was fantastic and when you get five times the amount of fans compared to a normal week, it makes for a great atmosphere and night.
“That is what the boys will be wanting to happen again.”
Finishing the season strongly has become a habit for Saints in
recent years - and Wotherspoon hopes that can continue.
He said:“There are massive games coming up. Aberdeen beat us at McDiarmid 2-1 so we’ll be raring to go to prove them wrong at the weekend.
“We’ve managed to get results up there in the past so we’ll believe in ourselves and try and put on a good performance.
“In recent years, once we get past post-split, everyone seems to enjoy playing.
“We get results and that’s what we will be looking to do again this year.”
