ELEctioN 2017 Last call for the local candidates Crucial votes for power in council

- Staff Reporter

Lib Dem leader Willie Rennie Hopeful council candidates have been out and about in Perth and Kinross in a bid to win your vote ahead of Thursday’s all-important local government elections.

Campaigning has stepped up for the 40 seats over 12 wards which has seen a number of party big guns supporting local candidates as they bid to take control for the next term.

As well as the SNP, Conservatives, Liberal Democrats, Labour and Greens fielding their strongest line-ups, there are also 14 candidates standing on independent platforms, such is the interest which is being shown in the future of Perth and Kinross.

Each side has been putting across their final messages, with the SNP issuing its manifesto for Perth and Kinross with a week to go with a view to continuing its work set out in minority administration.

And writing in today’s PA, local Conservative group leader Ian Campbell has promised to be proactive if the party takes control.

Labour has attacked both the SNP and Conservatives for their respective government policies, with claims of failing standards in schools in Scotland.

And yesterday Scottish Liberal Democrat Leader Willie Rennie was in Aberuthven to push for his party.

Speaking to the PA he said: “The main issue for communities such as in Perth and Kinross is electing good people to run the council and the Liberal Democrats have that.

“The candidates here will be councillors all year round, not just in the run-up to elections when they are looking for your vote or when it suits them.”

Some 40 councillors will be elected following Thursday’s vote which is open to 16 and 17-yearolds for the first time.

The SNP is fielding enough candidates to take outright control at 2 High Street. The Scottish Conservatives are fielding 18 candidates and the Lib Dems 12.

There are 14 candidates standing on independent tickets - including a handful of former candidates for the main parties, while seven Labour hopefuls are targeting votes around the area. The Green Party has eleven representatives. Willie Rennie left with Catherine Scobie and son Bryce in The VIllage Shop
