Schools take up Glee Challenge

- Rachel Clark

Talented children from across Perth and Kinross have been taking part in the Glee Challenge at Perth Concert Hall.

The project saw more than 500 children from 14 school choirs from across the region come together to perform two songs each on stage.

The Perth heats of the challenge took place on Monday and Tuesday last week.

The choirs had to perform one song chosen by the competition’s organisers, and one song chosen by the schools themselves.

Each choir was then judged by an X Factorstyle panel.

Each school in the challenge was also visited by a coach to do workshops on vocals and choreography, to level out the playing field and make the Glee Challenge as fair as possible.

The first heat on Monday, April 24 was won by Tulloch Primary School, who saw off the competition from Balhousie, Inchture, Oakbank, Methven, Newhill and Viewlands to proceed straight through to the regional finals.

The second heat was won by Kinnoull Primary School, who took home first place ahead of Auchterarder, Invergowrie, North Muirton, St Madoes, Abernethy and Rattray, and will automatically join Tulloch in the Perth and Kinross final.

This is the second time Kinnoull has succeeded in the competition, as they won the Perth and Kinross final last year.

The organisers also gave out two ‘Esprit de Glee’ awards for the best behaved and most well mannered choirs, and watched to see who cheered on their opponents the most.

North Muirton and Methven Primary Schools took home the accolades for demonstrating the values of the Glee Challenge.

Tulloch and Kinnoull will now go through to the regional final on Monday, June 5 at Perth Concert Hall with the next four highest-placed schools, Inchture, Invergowrie, North Muirton and Viewlands. Organisers this year decided to introduce a wild card act, which was given to Oakbank Primary School, who will now also go through to the finals.

A Perth champion will then go on to the Scottish finals on Sunday, June 25, to compete against the winning schools from Aberdeen, Dundee, Stirling, Fife, Edinburgh and Falkirk.
