Tartan Tales get a show for the kids

Live group’s unique show for Fair City

- Melanie Bonn

Children’s Classic Concerts Tartan Tales Fair City parents and wee ones had a grand old time last year when Children’s Classic Concerts came to Perth Concert Hall with its Roald Dahl celebration show.

This year CCC returns, this time to St John’s Kirk, with a stimulating Scottish-themed show, titled ‘Tartan Tales’.

The deliriously enthusiastic Olly and Owen will present a selection of musical pieces, guaranteed to be fun and entertaining to young ears (aged 4-12).

They do this using some of Scotland’s best classical musicians picked from SNO, Scottish Ballet and the BBC, but this will not be a stuffy, sit-still concert.

London-based Owen told the PA what he has planned for the jampacked one hour musical show:

“As a duo explaining music to children, Olly and I have been coming to Scotland for the last 10 years. We started our show at the Edinburgh Fringe.

“We absolutely love being in Perth and Olly, who’s from Haddington is relishing getting stuck in to some pieces showcasing Scotland.

“Our Tartan Tales show does what it says on the tin: it’s full of brilliant Scottish stuff, like Fingal’s Cave.

“We’ll take you off, fast and furious on Tam O’Shanter’s horse, introduce everyone to Nessie and we’ll get everybody going with the music from the Hollywood movie, Braveheart.

“We have a new arrangement of The Campbells are Coming and we’ll be doing Farewell to Stromness by Peter Maxwell Davies, but with a new twist trying to make it really appealing for children.

“You can be sure there show is linked together with great stories of myth and mist and we will expect to get everyone in the audience participating.”

Owen confided that his own family is used to his playful on-stage antics, with his two-and-a half-yearold daughter Flora recently being overheard in a 1200-strong young audience loudly saying, “What’s Daddy doing now?”

Catch CCC and Tartan Tales at 3pm on Saturday, May 27 in St John’s Kirk.
