The PUG group hope to have another brilliant day and that everyone will be able to join them on the new date. Football news The Vale of Atholl FC Birks Cup final match was sponsored by R W Bell Building Services. The result was Ballinluig 1 - Vale 4, with scorers Millar, McLauchlan, Robinson and Thorne. The Vale team were: Walker, Henderson, Taylor, Simpson, Young, Millar, Smillie, Kennedy, Robinson, McLauchlan and Robertson. Substitutes were Thorne Houston, McLauchlan, Darabus and Webster. Unlike the last few week’s manager Thain found himself with a dilemma. Unfortunately, the Clark brothers, A Berry and T McLeod missed out. Also missing from the team were J Barrie and B Scrimgeour. Vale started really brightly and pressed the Luig team and seemed to get the upper hand early on. After a shot from Millar hit the cross bar, Robertson attacked the loose ball and the Luig player challenged him with the referee pointing to the spot. Few players wanted the resulting penalty, but Millar looked confident and stroked it home from the spot, resulting in 0-1. Vale continued to press. Smillie who was having a great game in centre midfield played a great ball through to McLauchlan. Keeping the goal keeper on his toes, he managed to strike the ball home for Vale’s second goal, to make it 0-2. Vale’s defence and midfield were now on top. The Luig players came into the game during the last 15 minutes of the first half, but the team defended superbly. Second half with no changes, and the teams started brightly. Luig tried to push the play and get back into the game. Vale’s team stuck to their task and seemed to weather the storm. Young then found himself free on the left, with the Luig players backing off. He whipped in a great cross and the keeper was in two minds, but the bounce was kind and Robinson judged it well and headed home to make it 0-3. Vale then made changes. Thorne came on for Robertson and Houston came on for the injured Kennedy. Vale continued to press ahead. After a throw in, Millar made a great challenge and put over a good cross. Thorne half volleyed the ball home for a four goal lead for the Vale team. Vale made another couple of changes with Webster and Darabus coming on for Robinson and McLauchlan. Ballinluig were awarded a penalty with two minutes to go. Keeper Walker was left with no chance and the game finished at 1-4. On a whole, the team was brilliant from start to finish. Defence was solid, midfield never gave the opposition a chance with the front players, Robertson and McLauchlan giving the Ballinluig defence so much trouble. Robinson and Henderson on the right had great games, with Smillie and Kennedy battling the whole game. McLauchlan never got intimidated by their big centre half and the substitutes all played their part when introduced. The managers’ player of the match was Brian Taylor. Tomorrow Vale will be away to Dunkeld in a league match with a 2pm start. Flower Club Pitlochry Flower Club will meet at Scotlands Hotel, Pitlochry on Wednesday, May 17, at 2pm.
