Scots have Wright stuff

- Matthew Gallagher

Tommy Wright admits he has “plenty of targets”as St Johnstone look to bolster their squad in the summer.

The Perth manager has had success with operating in the Scottish market – and that winning formula could again be implemented.

Wright said:“We’ve got a couple of young players who will hopefully sign new deals in the next couple of days.

“We’re working away quietly in the background to try and get other deals over the line. We’ve got plenty of targets and we want to get things done as quickly as possible.

“We have been working extremely hard but as yet nothing has happened.

“I think we’ve got the highest number of Scottish players in our squad throughout the league. So it has worked.

“That tells a story. At the level of contracts we give out – and I’ve nothing against bringing in foreign players – we need to be sure of exactly what we’re getting. That’s the case with Scottish players.

“In my time I feel that’s been the best market for us – try and get the best Scottish players we can. It’s not as if we’re not looking further afield, but you limit your chances of failure with recruiting Scottish players.”

Nominations for player and manager of the Scottish season were announced this week with no inclusions from the Perth club.

“Do you know what, I haven’t really looked at it in detail,”Wright said.“I would imagine a Celtic player is going to win it and a Celtic player will win young player of the year. That’s the right call.

“It’s great to be recognised by your fellow pros and those who write about the game.

“Everybody’s got opinions and I take it all with a pinch of salt.” Wright Saints boss Tommy
