Thirteen-year-old Archie Butler and 14-year-old Jake Spurway, who are both in third form at Glenalmond, took to the glen on their bikes during their Easter holidays, and have managed to raise £4,517 for Marie Curie. The pair cycled around 117km as they made their way from Fort William through the Great Glen to Inverness.

Mum Kate Butler explained why the boys wanted to raise money for the cancer charity: “Marie Curie helped my father when he was dying, and they were brilliant for palliative care. When Jake’s gran died, Marie Curie helped their family as well, so it is a cause close to both families’hearts.

“It is amazing, they set a target of £1,000 but they raised much more than that, and with £610 added on from Gift Aid, it will be over £5,000 they have raised. They thought they’d be lucky to even reach their target, so both boys are delighted.

“Both Archie and Jake have a great sense of adventure and love being outdoors - they are already planning their next adventure.”

The boys were met by their friends and family at the finish line in Inverness, where Jake’s grandfather played the bagpipes to mark their achievement.

Abbey Church The Sunday service was led by the Minister, Andrew Graham, and aided by the singing of the choir whose introit was ‘How sweet the name of Jesus sounds’. Bible readings by Ellen Anne Easson were Psalm 23 and from John ch 10 v 1 to 11. Mr Graham reminded those gathered that Jesus is to be trusted and believed, that he lived on earth and demonstrated that he was God’s chosen one, and that his followers should share with others what following Jesus meant to them. The congregation was asked if they listened to God. Often, people speak to God in their prayers but do they take time to listen to God who speaks to people in many different ways. His goodness is all around and people should listen to God’s voice and let it penetrate deep into their souls. Mr Graham’s sermon was followed by the hymn ‘I have decided to follow Jesus’ and amongst the prayers of intercession the congregation asked for blessings on all who do service for others whether at home or abroad. Choirmaster Austin Wilkie played Booree from the French Overture in Bruinar by J S Bach, Fuga Cromatica by Geug Telemainu and Short Prelude and Fugue in D minor by Bach.
