CONT’D FROM LAST PAGE

After last week’s big squad Vale were down to the bare bones once again. Only five players from the 16 stripped last week were available to play. Credit was given to the guys who missed out, coming in and putting a shift in and Knowles coming back from injury helped. On a scorching day in Dunkeld, Vale started really well. Competing all over the solid pitch, Dunkeld looked like they were still recovering from their game on Thursday. The home side were limited in their chances with the Vale defence on top and midfield on their game. The visitors opened the scoring, when Young received the ball at the back and arrowed a great ball over the defenders head for Matt Robertson to run onto, who managed to out-muscle the defender to slot it home for 0-1. Player M Clark had a good shot which fired over the bar. Vale were still pressing the home side and after some good midfield work, Gallacher found some space in the box and shot home from an acute angle for his first goal for the Vale this season to make it 0-2. Nearing the end of the second half, a great ball through for Gallacher to run on to, his left foot shot was goal bound, but unfortunately wasn’t hard enough and the defender cleared it. Dunkeld seemed like they were getting back into the game as the half wore on. The second half Dunkeld started with some purpose and began to put Vale under pressure. Defence was holding out, though, and limited their strikers to half chances. As the half wore on, Walker was called into action a few times with some smart saves. Knowles came on for M Clark up front and got stuck in from the off. Dunkeld were awarded a penalty from what the referee said was a late challenge from Walker. The striker made no mistake from the spot to make it 1-2. It was the reminder that Vale needed and they got more into the game. A couple of big chances for the Vale came from Smillie’s corners, but Vale could not finish them off. Then Knowles played a great ball through for Barrie, who managed to square the ball to Gallacher, and from close range hit the back of the net for his second to make it 1-3. Vale held out for a good win and the three points needed. It was a gutsy performance from a much-changed Vale team. Walker was solid in goal, and the back three of Young, Crowe and Taylor played well, and Berry never stopped all game. Smillie, Robertson and Gallacher got stuck in and drove the team forward. A Clark on the right had a really good game, with strikers M Clark, Barrie and when he came on, Knowles battled hard. Man of the match was between Smillie, Robertson and Gallacher with Gallacher getting the nod after his two goals. The next game and their last game will be a league match away to Letham Community on Tuesday, May 16.
