Pipes being replaced

Pedestrians and drivers navigating city centre roadworks Work under way in one of Perth’s busiest thoroughfares is to spread to neighbouring streets.

Traffic on South Street has been funnelled into one lane, parking has been suspended from Tesco to the former Farmfoods outlet and shoppers have had to squeeze past barriers set up around huge holes dug in the pavement for at least the past week.

Gas group SGN yesterday confirmed restrictions are likely to be in place for a further five weeks as a result of ongoing work to replace old gas main pipes.

A spokesperson explained: “We are investing £200,000 to replace our old gas mains and services with new plastic pipes to ensure a continued safe and reliable gas supply to the town centre.

“We started work in South Street at the start of May and this phase is due to take approximately five weeks to complete. During this time, we’ll have a lane closure and parking restrictions in place along South Street to ensure everyone’s safety around our work area.

“We’ll also need to temporarily relocate the existing taxi rank outside Tesco to further along South Street when we reach that section of the road.

“In early June, our engineers will progress to Canal Street, Charles Street and Scott Street. Over five weeks, we will be upgrading the gas mains in these three roads.

“We will have temporary lane closures in place around our work areas to keep everyone safe.”

The spokesperson added: “We appreciate roadworks can be frustrating and we’re doing everything we can to minimise disruption.

“We’d like to thank local residents and businesses for their continued patience and understanding. We have a compensation scheme in place for local businesses which suffer a genuine loss of trade.”
