Driver slurred words whileatwheelofcar

A driver was found in the early hours, slumped over the steering wheel of his car, which had stopped in the middle of a country road near Kinross, straddling the white line.

A passing motorist, who had flashed his lights in an unsuccessful bid to get the vehicle to move, noticed that it also had a flat tyre when he pulled up alongside.

Banging on the window failed to rouse the driver inside - and when the Good Samaritan got no response when he opened the door, the police and an ambulance were summoned.

Police managed to speak to 29-year-old Shaun Brady when they arrived on the scene shortly after 2am.

“But they noticed he was slurring his words, his eyes were glazed and there was a strong smell of alcohol coming from him,” depute fiscal Tina Dickie told Perth Sheriff Court.

He refused to take a roadside breath test and, when taken to Perth police headquarters, again declined to give breath samples.

He claimed he had been taking medication for his cold but still refused when it was explained that shouldn’t have any effect.

Sheriff Gillian Wade called for a background report on Brady after noting he has a “history” of road traffic offences, including two previous convictions for drink/driving.

One of them led to a driving ban as recently as February 25 this year.

The accused admitted failing to provide the breath specimens for analysis at the Barrack Street police office on December 3 after driving on the A977 Kinross-Kincardine bridge road earlier that morning.

Brady, of Cardowan Road, Glasgow, will be sentenced on June 7.

Although already disqualified, he had another interim driving ban imposed.
