Dunkeld shopkeepers are being asked to consider housing the town’s Post Office in the wake of the previous service closing last month.
The Dunkeld Post Office, which had been in the Highland Perthshire town since the 19th century, closed at the end of April.
Now, the Post Office is writing to local businesses to officially inform them of the closure, and ask if any of them are interested in running a counter service.
A Post Office spokesperson wrote to Mid-Scotland and Fife MSP Murdo Fraser.
The letter stated: “I would like to assure you that we are currently investigating the options available which would enable us to reinstate a Post Office service to the local community.
“In exploring this, it is important that any future service is sustainable for the person operating the service, and for the Post Office Ltd.
“It is hugely important that high street services like post offices and banks are kept open, particularly in rural villages, and I hope a replacement postmaster can be found in Dunkeld. I would encourage local businesses to get in touch with the Post Office if they are interested in running the service at Dunkeld.
“Obviously there will be a gap in Post Office provision in Dunkeld and it is important that this is not used as an excuse to remove services permanently.” The Post Office
Mid Scotland and Fife MSP Murdo Fraser said they have no intention of reducing their operations in Dunkeld, unless no replacement can be found.
Dunkeld residents now have to travel to Birnam or Murthly to use a Post Office.
