Party leaflets are wrong to duck Brexit issues
Dear Editor We at Perth for Europe were disappointed to discover that the local Conservative party election leaflets make no mention of Brexit, despite the Conservative candidate Ian Duncan being a Remain voting MEP who is presumably standing because he will lose his job when the UK leaves the EU.
The Conservatives seem to be running a campaign based on Ruth Davidson’s popularity and the unpopularity of Indyref2.
The SNP is unlikely to hold Indyref2 unless there is a substantial majority for it in the polls, which is currently not the case. In contrast, Brexit negotiations are about to start. This will be the greatest constitutional change the UK has undergone for decades, but is for some reason not worthy of mention.
Meanwhile non UK EU citizens living here are still being left in great uncertainty and the Conservatives seem incapable of admitting that they are never going to get a deal that matches the unrealistic expectations they have encouraged in Leave Voters. If Theresa May becomes the next Prime Minister, she will argue that this election has given her a mandate for Brexit. How can this be the case if Brexit is barely being discussed in election literature and no clear policies have been announced? At Perth for Europe we would urge everyone to vote for a clearly pro EU anti-Brexit candidate. Susannah Rae, Convener, Perth for Europe
