The butchers at the House of Bruar are celebrating this week after being crowned national champion of the barbecue.

The Higland Perthshire butchers won the 2017 Q Guild of Butchers annual BBQ Award for their sirloin steak, and were presented with the prize at an awards ceremony in Eastwood Hall, Nottinghamshire on May 21.

Alec Francis-Lawrence, from Bruar’s food hall, accepted the award on the night and said: “Our sirloin is one of the most popular cuts. We use local Aberdeen Angus beef taken from a 28 day aged carcass which we butcher ourselves.

“We are thrilled that the judges enjoyed it as much as our customers do.”

The Blair Atholl butchers from the House of Bruar secured their place in the UK finals after winning the Scottish BBQ heats in both the sirloin steak and pork sausage categories. But their sirloin steak saw off stiff competition from seven other regional winners to be crowned king of the grill.

The butchers were all judged by a panel of experts, including David Hughes from UK BBQ magazine.
