120thyear onIsland

King James VI Golf Club is celebrating its 120th anniversary on Moncrieffe Island this year.

In 1897, the King James club moved from its original berth on the North Inch and there have been plenty of changes over the years.

Time, design and technology have seen the steady transformation from the treeless, sheep-grazing island of the 19th century landscape to the sculpted, modern and challenging tree-lined 18 hole layout of today.

The King James VI course, described by Provost John Hulbert at the 150 celebration dinner as‘a jewel in Perth’s crown’remains a surprise for many.

It’s on record as one of the few in-town, 18 hole island golf courses in the world and yet, because of it’s subtle location, remains undiscovered.

Club captain Dennis Brown said:“The standard, beauty and condition of the golf course is enhanced by the natural tidal environment, which optimises irrigation quality, and the man made surface drainage systems.

“These have helped the club achieve a full 2016/17 winter season with only two lost playing days due to weather.”

The fact that King James VI is a full service member and visitor destination is an eye opener for some too.

The fully staffed and equipped bar, catering and golf shop combined with locker facilities - provide everything an established golf club needs.

Brown continued:“Visitors often say that they’ve seen the course from the Friarton Bridge and often wondered what it was like.

“Others even say that they didn’t know the place existed until someone brought them.

“In any case, they are always positively surprised and delighted to have played a great golf course in fabulous condition.”

To celebrate 120 years on the Island, captain Brown has announced a special offer of 18 month’s membership for the cost of a single season.
