THE NORTH OF TAY CUP

-

When Letham players stride onto the pitch this evening, one man will be at the forefront of their thinking.

The side from Seven Acres are on the brink of winning the prestigious North of Tay Cup with only Dundee’s Douglas Athletic standing in the way.

A final of any cup competition is an important occasion but this game, in particular, will hold greater significance after the sad passing of club founder Ken Drummond.

Writing their name in the amateur football history books and returning to Perth with the trophy would be extra special.

“It’s difficult to put into words how much it would mean to the club for them to win it,” secretary Jon Kidd explained to the Perthshire Advertiser.

“Letham Amateurs are our flagship team which everyone in the club looks up to.

“Our young players are encouraged to aspire to play for them, or at a higher level if that’s their aim, so the success of our flagship team is of real importance.

“There are two competitions which the team has not won in their history, the Scottish Amateur Cup and the North of Tay.

“They have won every other competition open to them at least once.

“In light of the recent passing of our club president and club founder, Ken Drummond, there is added poignancy attached to the competition, and the possibility of winning it, this year.

“The team will all be wearing commemorative strips for the final with “Drummond” on the back to honour Ken’s legacy and enormous contribution in building our club.

“I know all of the boys will be heading to Station Park on Friday with the aim of bringing the North of Tay Cup back to Seven Acres to cap off a season of which Ken was immensely proud.”

This current crop of Letham players have been tagged as the most successful in the club’s history and recently secured the Perthshire Division One title without a defeat all season.

That success, Kidd says, can’t solely be placed on the heads of those who make up the starting 11 squad. It’s a team effort from top to bottom.

“The team has had a very busy season playing over 50 games to date,” Kidd said.

“While the club as a whole is abuzz with excitement about the North of Tay Final the team have been focussing on the job
