The Scotland Women’s football coach has been sharing her experiences with students at Perth College UHI.

Anna Signeul visited the college on Tuesday, May 23 in the first of series of sports and wellbeing guest lectures at the Goodlyburn campus.

Coach Anna, who herself is a former Swedish player, has coached the national Scottish team between March 2005 and is due to step down after the Euro 2017 championships.

Her lecture at Perth College UHI highlighted her journey from player to coach and her experiences with talent identification and management.

Sharon McGuire, sport and fitness sector manager at the college, said: “We were delighted to welcome Anna to Perth College UHI as our first guest speaker in a series of lectures on sport and wellbeing based in our new Academy of Sport and Wellbeing. Her talk outlined what is required to reach the highest level as a country, club, team, coach, player and volunteer within football. Anna explained her coaching philosophy and the demands required of players and inspired us all to be our own coach.”

Anna began her coaching at the age of 21 while she was a player at IK Brage, and has coached Stromsbro IF and Tyreso FF at club level as well as working with the Swedish FA as head of the national women’s youth team.

“She is now preparing to lead the Scottish team to the Euros in The Netherlands this August, before leaving Scotland to coach the Finnish National Team.

Nick Keiler, an active schools coordinator in Perth and Kinross, is a former coaching and developing sports student from Perth College UHI. He said: “It was brilliant to hear from someone at the sharp end of elite sport in Scotland.

“The most interesting part for me was the idea that whilst talent is an important mechanism to success - hard work, dedication and determination are equally as important.”
