Junior Football Heavy cup defeat is difficult to take
Gunnion says manner of loss was‘unacceptable’
Jeanfield Swifts manager Ross Gunnion admits Saturday afternoon’s East of Scotland Cup defeat was unacceptable.
The Perth team suffered a quarter final 9-1 defeat away at Musselburgh, who they had beaten the week before. Robbie Young scored the Swifts goal.
Injuries and suspensions didn’t help the Riverside cause but, even with that, Gunnion knows these kind of results shouldn’t be happening.
“I was very disappointed but given the circumstance I couldn’t be too critical,” he said. “We had six players missing through injury or suspension.
“Then on the day we suffered injuries to Chris Scott and Keith Dewar plus one other came down with a sickness bug.
“We started the game with one sub and finished it with nine fit players so you can imagine how difficult the circumstances were.
“That said it was still unacceptable to lose in the manner we did and the players were made aware of that.
“We may have achieved our targets for the season so far but that doesn’t mean we are now on holiday.
“We need to have a professional attitude and look to take that into each and every game regardless of the circumstances.
“The players have set high standards of late and they know they’ve let themselves down.”
Gunnion will be urging his squad of players to make up for the loss in their last game of the season against Linlithgow Rose this weekend.
“We will bounce back and finish the season with two good training sessions and a final home game with Linlithgow Rose,” Gunnion told the PA.
“On the whole I’ve been very happy with the way the team has developed this season so we won’t place too much emphasis on the game last Saturday.
“All I will ask of them is to finish the season off with a committed performance.
“The fact remains that we have more than deserved to retain our Super League status and it’s now our aim to start setting new targets for the club.”
