Church news The service on Sunday of last week was led by Rev Peggy Ewart-Roberts with the sermon given by Rev Bill Ewart. The readings from Genesis chapter 18, verses 1-15 and Romans chapter 5, verses 1-8 were by Charlotte Laing and Janet Coyle was organist. Rev Peggy was installed as Moderator of Presbytery on Tuesday, June 20, at Caputh Church. Services at Kinclaven Church are held each week at 9.45am.

RSPB Loch Leven Activities will begin at the reserve with a summer holiday club held every day, starting on Friday, June 23 until Tuesday, August 15, with wildlife challenges held from 10am to 4pm. There will be fun for all the children, prices vary from £1 to £3 per child (reserve entry not included). There is no need to book. Saturday and Sunday, July 1 and 2 will see an optics weekend, from 10am to 5pm on both days. Expert help and advice is available for anyone wishing to buy new binoculars and telescopes. Learn to Play music day Free music lessons are being offered at Loch Leven music tuition’s new studio in the Liberty Business Centre, 21-25 High Street, on Sunday, June 24. Kinross and Ochil Walking Group next walk will be held on Saturday, July 8 to East and West Lomond, Fife - distance of seven miles. This will be an ‘out and back’ walk taking in both summits of the Lomond Hills. Climbing East Lomond of 424 feet with a descent from the summit, to retrace steps back to the car park for lunch. Bowling Club Lottery numbers were 5, 14, 15 and 18. There were no winners and next week’s prize money will be £1080. Newburgh

Whinnybank Cat Sanctuary Sue went to Thornton last week to trap the mother and kittens that had been spotted there. She was able to pick up the tortoisesh­ell mum and put her into a carrier so she was obviously a domestic cat who had been dumped while pregnant. She also managed to trap the five kittens in the trap, one by one. They are now seven weeks old and it is hoped that after some tender loving care, they will be tame enough to be re homed. Sue is on a mission to make some rhubarb jam and asks members of the public to donate their spare rhubarb. Thanks go to the Friends of the Laing Museum for their recent donation of bric-a-brac and books. Bonus ball The winner of last week’s TICC bonus ball was Lily Doig on no 42. Pigeon Club Newburgh and District Racing Pigeon Club held a shortened race in their current old bird race programme - a flying distance of 70 miles from Berwick-upon-Tweed. The race was sponsored by the Abbey Inn, Newburgh and the club winners were R Nisbet, G Williams and G Wilson. Retired men’s club The pub held its annual day away coach trip to North Berwick last week. The members enjoyed another successful event and although the weather was good on their arrival, rain followed later in the day. Members thought that the meal in the Nether Abbey Hotel, North Berwick was excellent. The president Jim Russell expressed his thanks on behalf of the club to all their sponsors and supporting groups who assisted of Going Digital vouchers to spend on a profession­al photograph­y course and an exciting smartphone photograph­y accessory bundle.

Football news Vale of Atholl FC are sponsored by R W Bell Building Services. The club held their annual player of the year awards night in the Pitlochry Golf Club. Managing director of Vale’s main sponsor, Stephen Carruthers, presented the awards to player of the year Sean McLauchlan, young player of the year Glenn Robinson, top scorer Sean McLauchlan, and manager’s player of the year Steven Henderson. Blair Castle charity day This year the Guide Dogs for the Blind and Scotland’s Garden Scheme will benefit from this event which is being held on Saturday, from 10am to 4pm. All admission money will be donated to both charities. Attraction­s will include a raffle, stalls, tombola and many other activities run by local charitable organisati­ons.
