Forth and Tay Disabled Ramblers

It was a lovely day on May 10 when a group of Forth & Tay Disabled Ramblers and volunteers, led by Jim Wyllie, one of our founder members, set out to explore Balbirnie Park. Starting from the bottom car park the route set off up the hill, passing several bushes of rhododendrons in full bloom. Following the path up the hill and around by the golf course, after a short break to watch the golfers, we carried on until we came to the stream just behind the golf club, where we stopped for lunch. After lunch we headed out towards the group of standing stones which were moved to this position, after standing in their previous position for about 4500 years, to make room for the A92. The group spent some time wondering how it had been possible to build a stone circle all those years ago and what it all meant. Heading for home on a different route, we passed a farm and eventually came out past Balbirnie House with a magnificent display of flowers on a bank opposite. A short distance on and we were back at the car park. On June 3 Forth and Tay Disabled Ramblers had an outing to North Inch Park at Perth. Starting at Almond Vale Industrial Estate and following the cycle route, the group made its way alongside the Tay. The game was speculating how much the houses on the opposite side of the river would cost. Outside most of our budgets was the decision. The sun sparkled on the water and beat down on the ramblers. After 2-3 miles we came out in to North Inch Park. Following the path up towards Balhousie Castle, we decided to have lunch on the green just behind the castle. After lunch we made our way around to the front of the castle, where a smaller version of The Kelpies was on display. We walked up to the top of the park then around and down to the river again. Following the golf course, we headed back to Almond Vale. Unfortunately the rain caught up with us just short of where the cars, vans and bus were parked but a little rain did not spoil a very good outing. Next ramble is on June 23 to Lomond Hill Reservoirs. Anyone interested in joining our club can obtain further information from our website at www.ftdr.com or from Aileen at 01592620520.

Vice-president John Greaves welcomed everyone and introduced Marion Foster, whose topic was kilt making. The history and tradition of tartan and the art of kilt making were explained, together with the details of Marion’s career. There is little known about tartan’s origins. It was around the 17th to 18th century that clan tartans began to be recognised. The Act of Proscription of 1746 saw tartan being banned. This law was repealed in 1782. The association of the kilt with military regiments was highlighted. The VOT was given by Roger Whittle. The next meeting will be a bowling fun day at the West End Bowling Club at 10am on Thursday, June 29.

Tay Probus Club

Our speaker on June 14 was Emma

White, head of fundraising for the Archie Foundation Tayside Children’s Hospital Appeal. Emma explained that the name of the foundation incorporates the initial letters from the Aberdeen Royal Children’s Hospital, the first organisation to receive support from the charity. The Tayside appeal is targeted with raising the £2m required to greatly expand the existing children’s hospital within the grounds of Ninewells. The planned development, agreed between an NHS Tayside team and senior management of the foundation, will enlarge the facility to incorporate two dedicated operating theatres and create extra capacity for children and parents in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Inspired through personal family experience to become involved in raising the necessary funding, Emma has been active in organising countless widely varied projects. These have included the hugely popular and successful Oor Willie Bucket Trail, which raised in excess of £800,000, a virtual challenge to walk the Great Wall of China. It is anticipated that the target will be achieved by spring of 2018. Emma was congratulated and warmly thanked by Bruce McMillan. On June 21 Ian Thom’s subject was ‘Civil Engineering – a Creative and Rewarding Career.’ Ian was inspired to become a civil engineer by the life of Isambard Kingdom Brunel (1806 – 1859), who is

one of the most ingenious and prolific figures in engineering history. His works include the Clifton Suspension Bridge, the Royal Albert Bridge at Saltash, the Great Western Railway and the SS Great Britain. Ian’s first job was with John Laing, during which he was seconded to Freeman Fox. He then spent 29 years in Hong Kong, six years in South Africa and four years in Malaysia. The West Rail project in Hong Kong was massive and included about 200 contracts and five million tons of concrete. There were 1300 site operatives. The work in South Africa was a railway between Johannesburg and Pretoria. There was a requirement to involve black people but during apartheid it was illegal to teach them maths. He has nearly retired several times and even now has taken on a consultancy. Terry Lothian gave the vote of thanks. On July 5 the club has an outing to the Scottish Maritime Museum at Irvine. On July 19 Hugh Wark’s topic is ‘Borders Railway’.
