Banned from road Driver slumped over wheel

- Court Reporter

Passing motorists contacted the police after they saw a driver slumped over the wheel of his car on a country road in the early hours.

His vehicle had stopped in the middle of the A977, near Kinross, straddling the white line.

One of the members of public, who had flashed his lights in an unsuccessful bid to get the vehicle to move, noticed that it also had a flat tyre when he pulled up alongside.

Banging on the window also failed to rouse the man inside - and when the Good Samaritan got no response when he opened the door, the police and an ambulance were summoned.

Officers arrived on the scene shortly before 2am and managed to speak to 29-year-old Shaun Brady of Cardowan Road, Glasgow, Perth Sheriff Court was told. “But they noticed he was slurring his words, his eyes were glazed and there was a strong smell of alcohol coming from him,” depute fiscal Tina Dickie told the court.

He refused to take a roadside breath test and when he was taken to Perth Police HQ, he again declined to give breath samples.

He claimed he had been taking medication for his cold but still refused when it was explained that shouldn’t have any effect.

Brady has a previous conviction for drink/ driving which led to a driving ban as recently as February 25 this year.

He was disqualified for three years and ordered to complete 180 hours of unpaid work when he appeared for sentence.
