Foreign farm workers to watch fire safety film

- Rachel Clark

A new film on fire safety is to be given to foreign farm workers, following the death of a migrant worker on a Perthshire farm last year.

The man, whose name was never released, died after a fatal caravan fire on the Mains of Errol fruit farm in the Carse of Gowrie on July 31, 2016.

Now, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service will be launching a new film called“Flashpoint”today (Friday, July 21), which aims to educate migrants working on farms across the country.

The DVD will cover a range of safety issues, including community safety, fire safety, road safety and personal safety, as well as a message on anti-social behaviour.

This film will be shown to all farm workers during their farm induction session, which all workers have to attend before they start.

Since the tragedy last year, the Fire Service have visited all 190 workers on the fruit farm near Errol to offer safety advice.

It is hoped this new DVD will build on this, as well as by offering individual caravan inspections in partnership with PKAVS ethnic minorities hub.

Farm managers have also increased fire safety by introducing weekly caravan inspections, smoke detector checks, and putting up safety messages inside the caravans themselves.

The DVD will now be distributed to farms across the country.
