This no-pressure, family friendly cycle is loved by kids of all ages and every experience level.

In addition to their annual Classic Challenge and Big Belter cycles, Scotland’s biggest bike event, Pedal for Scotland, are holding several “wee” rides across the country, which are perfect for riders of every experience level.

The Wee Jaunt in Perth on August 6 will be the latest in a series of bike rides encouraging kids to keep active.

The six-mile traffic-free circular route starts and finishes at Perth Concert Hall, taking in The North Inch and Perth city centre.

The distance is short enough for the smallest of legs to pedal round but long enough for grown-ups to enjoy on a Sunday ride. Much to the delight of the children, all riders receive a much-coveted medal at the finish line.

Hundreds have already taken part in the Wee Jaunt in Falkirk and raved about the experience.

Evidence suggests that mass participation sporting events can encourage activity levels and boost motivation.

Organised cycle events have never been more popular in Scotland and can be a stepping stone to more activity.

Cycling is also a great way to keep young ones amused. It’s fast and fun and gives them freedom and a sense of independence.

The Wee Jaunt events give families the opportunity to enjoy cycling together without the pressure of tackling busy or public roads.

The closed-road circuit in Perth will give parents peace of mind that their children are safe, in a controlled environment, until they build up the confidence to tackle longer or road routes. There’s no time expectations so children can go at their own pace, but even if they go too fast – as far as parents are concerned – thanks to the route and stewards, this is an environment in which to push the boundaries.

Cycling as a family improves fitness and it also boosts mental attitude and can relieve stress.

Taking part in joint family activities strengthens bonds and reinforces the message to children that sport makes you feel great – and need not be expensive.

Experts recommend 60 minutes of physical activity every day for children, something that currently one-third of children are failing to achieve.

Family-friendly events like this remind parents that there’s nothing like fresh air, fun, and exercise to tire out youngsters.

And with the summer holidays in full swing, now is a good time to make sure kids are fitted out for fun on their bikes.
