Abbey Church The service in Abbey Church on Sunday of last week was conducted by Rev Andrew Graham. Hymns were God We Praise You, Stand up and Bless the Lord, I’m not Ashamed to own my Lord and I, The Lord of Sea and Sky. The reading was taken from One Samuel chapter 17, verses 16-40 and 48-50 and was read by Irene Henderson. In his sermon, Mr Graham referred to the story of David and Goliath and where Saul wanted to clothe David in armour before fighting Goliath. David told him he could not wear his armour as he was not used to it. Saul tried to make David into someone he was not – but making him look like a warrior did not make him one. This was true of people, we should not try to make ourselves or anyone else someone they are not. Everyone is unique and God knows and will equip people and enable them to do his will. Just as David faced Goliath without armour because he knew God was with him, so too we can face unimaginable situations with the same knowledge. Musical offerings were provided by organist Austin Wilkie and consisted of Gavotte in F (unknown), Dark Island and Tylman Susato’s La Mourisque, and Neil Diamond classic Love on the Rocks. Prayer group continues to meet in the Abbey on Wednesdays at 2pm. The charity shop organised by Sheila and Allan Legge was a huge success and, has raised £4895 so far with some monies still to come in. Andy thanked Sheila and Allan for their hard work in pulling this event together, and also thanked the many helpers who worked in the shop during its two-weeks duration. Andy intimated how much he had enjoyed the fellowship and sense of community spirit. The EPACTS group will hold its annual ceilidh for foreign students in the town hall on July 21. Anyone who can help out with catering is asked to contact Helen Pithie on 01828 627365.
