Last Tuesday the PA ran a story for the push to create a direct rail service between Edinburgh and Perth. Previously mooted, this would have benefits for Perth and travel between Inverness and Edinburgh. Currently, Perth services stop through Fife, or there are connections through Dunblane, but both are in excess of a hour’s travel. It was compared with services to Glasgow, which is further away and has shorter journey times. The idea of a rail connection and the opportunities it might open up were welcomed by most of you.

Here’s a selection of your thoughts.

Pansy Potter - What a fantastic idea.

Michael Sheldon - Brilliant idea. It could potentially link Kinross and Dunfermline to Perth by rail as well on the way.

Angie Stewart - So there should be.

Margaret Maggie Brown Was there not a straight through link once a upon time ?

Ian Gibson -Yep, but a good part of it is now the M90.

Roderick Macduff - The tunnels at Glenfarg are still in good condition.

Christopher Anthony Cathro -Yes. I clearly remember taking the train from Perth through Stirling, Falkirk, Haymarket to Edinburgh Waverley. In fact the same train came from Aberdeen all the way down the east coast. I don’t live in the UK now but would love to know what numpty came up with changing that.

Kevin Fordyce - This has been on going now for 20yrs so a wudnae hold my breath ,.. .

Gary Marshall - it’s long overdue!

Adam K Stewart -Very long overdue!!!

Kirsteen Ross - We definitely need this!

Ian Carmichael - Get the one that’s there working properly first.

Ritchie Fraz - Progress. Replacing something we already had in the‘70s

Rory Macgregor - What about Glesgae and Aberdeen and Inverness.

Kathleen Clark - I’m just wanting a bus straight through to St Andrews from Perth!!

Alex Fisher - Never happen as the original railway’s route is under the M90 motorway. I believe there was a problem with mining subsidence in the section through Fife which led to speed restrictions.

Alex Fisher - The road lobby were the winners again as trackbed was not protected from building work and a motorway getting built on it

Richard Iain Scott - If this did go ahead it would go via Fife and not through Kinross.

Kirsty Lawrie - At long last hope if comes soon.

Emanuela Hunter - I thought there was a link already.

Amanda Mac - Seems odd to me that the Glasgow service is further yet quicker. Quicker and more frequent ideal. Longer trains with consistently effective wi fi at peak times running well would be excellent until a better alternative was found. More commuter-only cars in Edinburgh or Perth is not the answer.

Richard Ward- This would be fantastic for Perth to be linked (properly) to Edinburgh and beyond - better transport infrastructure needed to support investment into the City. They should never have taken it away. Perth to Edinburgh takes ages. The old line you were in Edinburgh in 45 mins.

Debbie Garry - Fantastic. The current time to Edinburgh is a disgrace.

Kenfitlike McKell - On the Virgin Trains East Coast service it takes around the same time to go from Perth to Edinburgh as it does from Edinburgh to Newcastle. That needs to change. Would express services or a direct rail line to Edinburgh tempt you out of your car?
