Nashville’s finest get set for Southern Fried

- Melanie Bonn

A fresh voiced female singer is stepping on stage during the big Saturday Southern Fried concert, which also features Loudon Wainwright III.

When Rodney Crowell cancelled all his European summer dates, including Southern Fried on July 29 due to unforeseen circumstances, one of Nashville’s very finest songwriters, Beth Nielsen Chapman agreed to perform in Rodney’s place.

Among Beth’s own recordings, the ground breaking ‘Sand and Water’, was performed by Elton John on his 1997 US tour in place of ‘Candle In The Wind’.

‘Deeper Still’ was voted Album of the Year by BBC Radio 2’s Terry Wogan and this was followed by ‘Back to Love’, released in 2010.

Then in 2012 Beth debuted ‘The Mighty Sky’, songs about the wonders of astronomy that earned her a 2014 Grammy nomination for Best Children’s Album.

Beth’s 2014 release, ‘Uncovered’, saw her perform songs that had been covered by other artists, most of them Top 10 US hits, but she has never recorded herself.

A breast cancer survivor and environmentalist, Beth teaches workshops internationally, inspiring others to fully blossom into their creative life.

She is also the newest inductee into the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame 2016.

• Southern Fried kicks off on Thursday and ends on Sunday, July 30.

The line-up includes: Thursday - The Songs of Chuck Berry feat. Andy Fairweather Low’s Hi Riders with Cyndi Cain, Flats & Sharps, Steve Gibbons, Amythyst Kiah, Angaleena Presley, Doug Seegers, Hamish Stuart and Geraint Watkins – 7.30pm, Perth Concert Hall.
