Christy McIntosh Education development officer

Christy McIntosh (26) is the newest member of the SCYD team. He joined almost one month ago taking up a Children’s Lottery funded post.

He said:“My role will be mainly off-site provision with Blairgowrie High School so I will be putting in a lot more hours once the schools go back. I’ve spent the first three weeks getting familiar with the kids, it’s great to see them helping out with the charity shop the past week.

“I will be working with kids who are not interacting as well and get them to integrate more with mainstream education, as well as helping them with their emotional well being and working on specific subjects. It will be quite loose in terms of the needs of the individual.

“I have always been in the area, I grew up in Kettins and I went to Blairgowrie High School myself. I have also worked at Kettins, Burrelton and Alyth primary schools, but this is totally different, it is such a tightknit community and you get to see lots of different generations.”

“I was very keen to make sure I stayed in the area.”

Two of Christy’s hobbies are music and sport, and he is already getting the young people at SCYD involved.

He continued:“I have done some community projects with Perth Concert Hall in the past as well and I studied music at Perth College. I teach the guitar and bass guitar, and I am into sports as well. I have started up a football group at SCYD on Fridays, which is a win-win for me!”

“I have been doing gardening groups as well as fundraising and football, so it’s great to be part of such a large community.”

One of Christy’s main goals at SCYD is increasing the opening hours of the Den, the centre’s dedicated space for young people in Blairgowrie.

Currently a number of groups use the centre up until 6pm during the week, but Christy has started opening it up until 9pm in the evenings to help get more young people in.

“I want to start opening up The Den a bit more. I want it to be open from 6pm until 9pm and we got a later opening last week for the holidays.

“It’s been going really well, the staff and the volunteers that come in are amazing, it’s been really great. ”

And one thing Christy is looking forward to is getting interviewed on television next month.

Christy will get a chance to meet some of the people behind the Children’s Lottery when representatives from the good cause visit SCYD’s Wellmeadow base on Wednesday next week.
