Charity walk to honour the dead

-

A Perth man is walking 125 miles from London to Passchendaele in support of CATH House in Perth and Combat Stress.

Ron Hogg, development officer for the local charity, began his charity trek on Sunday with his brotherin-law Craig Thomson-Hay.

Their aim is to raise £1000 for each charity to assist them in their support for people in need.

CATH House is a 16-bed hostel in York Place for men and women with substance misuse issues.

The pair left the home of the Royal Army Ordnance Corps in Woolwich, crossed the Channel and began to walk through France on their way to the battlefield.

They are due to arrive on the centenary of the death of Sgt Williams of the The Royal Army Ordnance Corps (RAOC), who died at Passchendaele on August 3, 1917.

He is buried in Tyne Cot Cemetery, the largest cemetery for Commonwealth forces in the world.

His corps was responsible for supplying weapons, military equipment, ammunition and clothing plus laundry, mobile baths and photography as well as repairing of army equipment.

On their route the walkers will pass through the Menin Gate in Ypres, where they will lay a wreath for another of the Passchendaele fallen, Sgt McNeill, whose body was never recovered from the battle.
