Circus girls see total climb to over £1200

Raising cash for We Love Manchester fund

A group of acrobatic youngsters are celebrating after raising more than £1200 for those affected by the Manchester attack.

Jocelyn and Darcey Meek, Daisy Smith and Eilidh Donnachie from Perth’s Adventure Circus took on the challenge of trying to climb up six-metre silk ropes suspended from the ceiling continuously for a whole hour.

The four girls at the North Muirton club were moved by the terror attack at the Ariana Grande concert in Manchester Arena earlier this year, and were determined to do their bit to help the families of those killed in the tragedy.

Gemma Simpson, the owner of Adventure Circus, said she was extremely proud of the group: “It was a pretty tough challenge. To be honest, we would never normally do something like that in a normal class.

“It was such a busy night, lots of the girls’ friends and family came in to cheer them on, and that really kept the energy up. We streamed it Adventure Circus raised £1200 for We Love Manchester

over Facebook Live as well, so that got lots of people talking too.

“The girls did it all themselves. They made their own posters to advertise it, and encouraged everyone at the circus to get involved.

“We are all super proud of them,

because we’ve never done anything like this before.

“We had a little party afterwards and we got sweeties for all the girls - although a more sensible parent brought them bananas to keep their energy levels up! But after only five minutes rest, the girls were back up on all the kit, they were so excited. We gave them a great big thank you at the end of the night, they were absolutely thrilled.”

On the night, the four girls managed to raise more than £1200 for the We Love Manchester fund by climbing a whopping 75 ropes in one hour, which will all go directly to helping those affected by the terrorist attack. However, Adventure Circus say they are expecting the total to rise even further, as one supporter promised to match half of whatever the girls managed to raise.

Gemma now says the night was such a success, they are considering making the sponsored silk climb an annual event. She continued: “The girls did so well, they dug deep and just kept on climbing.

“What we will be looking to do now is incorporate it into an annual challenge. Eventually the aim will be to set a Guinness World Record. That takes a long time but we are hoping to get to that stage!

“A massive well done from all the instructors at Adventure Circus. They all did so well to raise so much money, and we are all very proud of them.”
