Shopping in Perth: your facebook views

-

Last month The PA ran story on the future of shopping in Perth, with leading figure John Bullough claiming the city was turning away from being a shopping destination to one for events, and the trend, ultimately was a move away from retail. The counterargument came from Perth retailers. Here’s your views on the discussions.

Maggie Taylor - I used to like coming into Perth, but with all the road works it’s difficult for a disabled driver like me to find somewhere close to park since Mill Street lost its parking spaces.

Vivien Totten- I’ve lived in Perth for many years and over the years have seen many changes and find Perth now dire to shop in with the eyesore of many shops shut and not reopened and the lack of good shopping in Perth. It’s sad as Perth is a beautiful town. You shouldn’t call Perth a city as it certainly ain’t that. We need more shopping experiences.

Keith Bell -Small independents (shops) may be very twee in small towns. The council should be encouraging larger business into the city centre. It’s not very encouraging though that the chair of the committee who has suffered as a failed business owner does not feel that Perth should be a mainly retail area. Perth as a city is not going to develop just because of a refurbished theatre and museum.

Rhoda Clark - Perth Traders Association, initially set up for the independents has been engulfed and changed recently. Not for the better.

Michael Sheldon - There are many great independent shops in Perth. Mountain Supplies is a good example, as is Bandwagon. Where we fall short is getting big name shops to come here and stay here.

Kevin Heller - People don’t have to live here, if it’s so bad, why not move to one of these other places which has magically not been affected by the global economy and the growth of online shopping... then come back and tell us where this utopia is and we’ll all come and join you.

Pete Chan - Manifesto Clothing is an independent clothes business in the Fair City, which has operated successfully for over three decades. Proof, that it can be done.
