Bike fun is set to take over Perth city centre

- Ross Gardiner

Perth on the Go is set to take the Fair City by storm this weekend as Perth and Kinross Council bids to promote swapping petrol for pedal power.

The event, which will take place on Sunday, August 6, throughout the city centre, will see cycle routes planned in and around the High Street, with people encouraged to bring along their own bikes or rent them from a selection supplied by Comrie Croft for a small charge.

Among them is the Wee Jaunt, part of the series of Pedal for Scotland events.

The PA is a media partner for this gentle, circular ride around the city and its environs which is aimed at families.

There will be plenty of other pedal powered fun, from smoothie machines to bike maintenance.

Meanwhile, as part of the push to ditch fossil fuels, Stagecoach will be promoting their range of routes, whilst many eco-friendly electric cars will be exhibited by local Motor Mile dealerships.

Councillor for the Perth City Centre Ward Peter Barrett is a big fan of the project, and can see Perth embracing continental transport themes.

“I think the project is a really good idea and it will be great to get families into the city centre.

“I’ve recently been to Brussels, Belgium, and there the entire city centre is closed off to traffic twice a year. It’s fantastic, and I think it could be a real role model for places like Perth.”

Mill Street, lanes in Tay Street and Kinnoull Street, a section of South Street and the encompassed city centre area will all be closed until 6pm for the event.

The day kicks off at 11am on King Edward Street, however stalls and activities will be taking place throughout the city centre.

Perth will be a cycle-friendly city on Sunday
