O’Halloran backed to build on opening day heroics

The forward on loan from Rangers netted a spectacula­r late solo strike to bag the Perth side all three points in the league opener against Kilmarnock.

Wotherspoo­n had given Saints a first half lead with a neat left-footed finish before Kris Boyd powered in a second half free-kick to level the scores.

But O’Halloran, who will be with the McDiarmid Park squad until January, had the last laugh by drilling home in the closing stages of the contest.

Wotherspoo­n expects the 26-year-old to shine further and said: “Mikey is a good character to have about and is a good lad.

“It’s a shame it hasn’t worked out for him at Rangers, but I’m sure he’ll be wanting to prove people wrong - and he did that on Saturday.

“It was a fantastic goal and I’m really pleased for him. He scored goals when he was here before and he has started again, which is great for us.

“Kilmarnock dominated most of the second half after we had played really well in the first half.

“They changed it a little bit with two up top and I think benefited from that. But we dug in, showed a desire that we want to win games and were rewarded.”
