Will there be Brexit support?
Dear Editor
MP Luke Graham blames the Scottish Government as apparently only 90.4% of common agricultural policy payments from the EU had been paid on time (PA, August 1).
He then went on to ask for more support for the Scottish farmers. I was astonished at his audacity! Has Brexit been cancelled?
Scottish farmers benefit greatly from the SU CAP payments, far more than English farmers. After Brexit, as key powers over agriculture go to Westminster, instead of Holyrood, support has only been guaranteed for Scottish farmers up to 2022.
After this many of our farmers could be crippled due to the removal of CAP payments from the EU.
Scotland’s food industry also benefits from the high environmental food safety and animal welfare standards set down by the EU.
Now it will be at the mercy of a US trade deal with Donald Trump, which will allow inferior cheap imports to flood the UK market. For example, hormone injected beef has been vigorously resisted by Scottish farmers and is banned by the EU.
Scotland’s food and drink industry exports high quality produce around the world. Scottish salmon is the UK’s biggest export. Our successful food industry is being put at risk due to the Conservative government’s Brexit and Mr Graham is part of this.
So perhaps he would like to inform us as to the support, if any, that our Scottish farmers will receive to mitigate the disaster of Brexit on their business and livelihoods? Sylvia Latham Murray Crescent Perth
