New chairman thanks all the community for their support
Comrie Fortnight chair Ewen Stewart This year’s Comrie Fortnight has been hailed a great success under the new chairmanship of Ewen Stewart.
The 21 year-old is one of the youngest ever to take on the role but the logistics of organising such a major event – which is the highlight of the local events calendar in the south-west Perthshire village.
The event drew to a close with the Grand Float Parade on August 5.
Ewen, who is also treasurer of Strathearn Junior Agricultural Club, said: “Most things ran rather smoothly.
“It was stressful at times but we got there. It was all good fun. I had more responsibility than before when I was just a normal committee member and felt more responsible for the people around me, but I also have a great team. If it wasn’t for the rest of the committee the event wouldn’t run as smoothly as it does.
“Highlights for me included the fantastic number of floats on the last day. It was good to see them after all the rain and the sun shone on the day. And it’s amazing the support we get for events even if it is raining.”
Asked if he’s aiming to follow in dad Allan’s footsteps by being chair for 11 years, Ewen added: “We’ll just have to see how it goes.
“We had another successful year and hopefully can reproduce it in years to come.
“Thank you to everyone for their support – the more the village puts in to the Comrie Fortnight, the more Comrie Fortnight can put in to the village.
“Thanks also to all the volunteers – we couldn’t do it without them.”
A spokesperson for Comrie Fortnight committee said: “Members of the committee have all said it has been good to have Ewen leading the team.
“We are sure that everyone recognises the amount of work that needs to be done throughout the year to make the Fortnight happen.
“And it is a great group of volunteers who ensure the continued success of the Comrie Fortnight.”
