Sweco to lead work on Cross Tay link road
Swedish company take on council’s £113m project
Engineering consultants Sweco UK have been appointed as the lead consultants for the Cross Tay Link Road.
The Swedish company will now take on Perth and Kinross Council’s £3.5m consultancy contract to lead the £113m project, part of Perth Transport Futures, on the outskirts of the city.
The project, which will create a third road and rail crossing over the River Tay, aims to improve air quality within the city centre, and reduce congestion.
Cllr Colin Stewart, convener of Perth and Kinross Council’s environment, enterprise and infrastructure committee, said: “I am pleased that we have reached another milestone in this significant project for Perth and Kinross.
“Phase two [of four] of the project will see the creation of a much-needed third bridge over the River Tay which will help to take the pressure off the city infrastructure and improve traffic movement and air quality.”
Sweco’s Edinburgh and Glasgow offices will now begin working on the Cross Tay Link Road project, which will include infrastructure design, site investigations, drainage and flood assessments, public utility liaison and design, and looking at the environmental impact, as well as archaeological and ecological studies. They will also support the council with procurement and their planning application.
This comes as Sweco carried out £3.3m worth of land acquisition with council officers to start work on the construction project.
Chris Cardno, Sweco UK’s operations manager, said: “We are very pleased to have been appointed as lead consultant on this project, which will deliver a wide range of benefits to Perth and the surrounding local area. This is a great opportunity for us to utilise our multi-disciplinary approach and UK-wide expertise to deliver another extremely important infrastructure project in Scotland.”
Sweco will now begin designing the Cross Tay Link Road, which will be completed in mid-2019, and a planning application will be submitted later that year. If approved, construction work to begin building the link road will start in 2021 and is expected to be completed in 2023. Cllr Colin Stewart
