Families set to invade castle for festival of fun

- Rachel Clark

Lots of family fun is promised during the Black Watch Castle and Museum’s summer festival.

A jam-packed day of fun activities will be held at the Balhousie Castle from 10am until 4pm on Sunday, August 27.

The event will include reenactments, face-painting, storytelling from soldiers, family crafts and cookie decorating.

Those who want to find out what it was like to be a Black Watch soldier will even be able to try dressing up as one, and practice marching drills.

Entertainment on the day will come from the pipes and drums, as well as a choir and a ceilidh band who will provide live music, along with an outdoor barbecue in the castle grounds overlooking the Fair City’s North Inch.

One of the highlights of the day will be kids’ gallery tours, where children will be told stories and made to solve riddles to find museum artefacts which have been hidden throughout the castle. Intrepid children on these tours will also have to keep their eyes peeled for a First World War soldier and his nurse companion, who will be wandering through the galleries on the day looking for new recruits.

The museum will also be welcoming a former Black Watch soldier for ‘trench tales’, who will be sharing his stories of being on the front line. Entry is £5, and children go free. All events are free, although some of the more popular ones may need to be booked in advance.

To reserve a place, contact the castle on 01738 638152 extension 201.

Each gallery tour lasts approximately 20 minutes, and starts on the hour and the half hour from 10.30am until 3pm.

Each ‘trench tales’ session lasts 20 minutes and starts at quarter to and quarter past each hour, from 10.45am until 2.45pm.
