FIREFIGHTER TRAINING New recruits ready for action after intensive training

- Ross Gardiner

Volunteer firefighters have stepped up to the frontline to help protect communities across Perth and Kinross.

The latest recruits completed their two-week intensive training course recently and will now be posted to stations across east Perthshire and beyond.

Boosting the ranks is the latest move by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service to protect communities in Scotland’s most rural areas – including Kirkmichael, Glenshee and, further afield, Kinloch Rannoch.

Among the brave latest volunteers is estate manager Ben Sutcliffe.

The dad-of-two maintains the grounds of Cray House Estate near Glenshee and described his latest role as his most worthwhile to date.

Ben (40) said: “I am a handson type of guy and I wanted to give something back while also pushing myself.

“Becoming a volunteer firefighter was one of the most mentally and physically challenging tasks I have faced. However, I’ve come out the other side confident we can tackle whatever is thrown at us.

“The trainers were absolutely fantastic – the intensity, the discipline and the teamwork involved has been a real breath of fresh air.

“Becoming a volunteer firefighter forces you to look at what you are good at and what you can improve on – the SFRS is great at providing the resources and capacity to do that.”

Volunteer firefighters play a vital role in keeping Scotland’s most rural communities safe. Twelve per cent of fire stations in Scotland are crewed by them.

Nicky Barbour, an Active Schools co-ordinator from Ballintuim, also joined the ranks.

The 47-year-old, who is also involved in ski-patrol, has a passion for the outdoors and rescue.

She said: “The most rewarding part of being a volunteer firefighter, or a rescuer in any capacity, is helping people in crisis.

“It gives you a real sense of purpose, and the training we receive gives you the confidence to go into potentially volatile situations with confidence.”
