Butcher’s steak in electric vans

-

Produce from two family-owned butchers shops in Highland Perthshire will get to customers by electric vehicles in future.

MacDonald Bros, with its two outlets in Pitlochry and Aberfeldy, has invested of two all-electric delivery vans.

They deliver across Highland Perthshire from Kenmore to Aberfeldy, Kinloch Rannoch, Dunkeld, Blair Atholl and next day across the UK on orders placed before 11am.

The move from diesel to electric vans is estimated to save the butchery business between £12,000 and £14,000.

Owner Rory MacDonald said: “When I decided to upgrade the two delivery vans, I had a long hard look at whether to go electric and decided this was the future.

“The vans are easy to drive with just one pedal, and there’s no smelly flammable refuelling involved. It takes about four hours to charge from empty to full, costing less than Owner Rory MacDonald, second right, with staff from MacDonald Bros Butchers in Pitlochry £3 in electricity.

“There is no road tax, the running costs work out at about 1p per mile. It makes the vans so much cheaper to operate, both in parts and servicing.

“We anticipate saving around £12,000-14,000 a year by switching to the new technology.”

Due to the fears that rising levels of nitrogen oxides pose a major risk to public health, Britain plans to ban all new petrol and diesel cars and vans from 2040.
